August 2017

Dear First Grade Families,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year at Carlton Avenue Elementary School!  I am very excited to be your child’s first grade teacher.  I received my BA and teaching credential at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  I taught in southern California for six years, Arizona for five years, and this will be my seventh  year here at Carlton.  I’ve taught kindergarten through fourth grade, and I’ve been teaching first grade for the past ten years.  I live in San Jose with my husband and two children, Taylor (7) and Dylan (3).  Taylor is in 3rd grade here at Carlton and I am proud to be a parent here as well!  We also have three dogs (hence the dog theme).

First grade is a year filled with many new concepts and experiences.  This is a big year, not only academically, but emotionally.  I’m excited to be a part of their life experiences this year and hope to fill those brains with lots of information all while maintaining a safe, respectful and fun environment.

In reading, we will focus on phonemic awareness, high frequency words, fluency, comprehension, guided and oral reading.  In writing, we will work on spelling, organization, thinking maps, storytelling, proper spacing, punctuation and penmanship.  In math, we will focus on addition and subtraction faces, geometry, symmetry, fractions, time, place value and measurement.  In science, we will study plants, animals, habitats, weather, and properties of matter.  In social studies, we will focus on our community, jobs in our community, maps and the importance of school and citizenship.  Technology will also be a part of our daily curriculum.   Students will learn to navigate educational apps, work together and present their work to others.  Students will also receive specialized instruction from our P.E. and music teachers throughout the day.

It’s going to be a year filled with learning and fun.  I look forward to working with you and your child.

                          Sincerely,

                       Mrs. Summer Aupperle
