October 2018

Union School District is proud to have the best teachers providing our students with a first-rate education and invaluable skills to navigate towards success in high school and beyond. Throughout the year, including during the summer, our teachers work hard not only to develop their students’ skills in every subject, but also continue to develop their own teaching skills. Through a multitude of professional development sessions and training, teachers hone their skills, learning new tools and strategies, and are constantly at the forefront of educational practices.

Over the summer, several teachers spent time digging into the science standards and reading and writing instruction. Many teachers were trained on small group reading instruction and Writer’s Workshop. On our first Professional Development Day of the year, all district teachers came together at Dartmouth Middle School for a focused day of learning. The day was packed with informative presenters and sessions. Well-received session topics included physical fitness games, digital citizenship, science and social studies instruction, social/emotional support systems, and much more.

The high-quality education provided by our talented teachers is evident every time I step into a classroom. Our teachers believe that every student can and should experience success in school. Our schools are certainly sought-after by new residents who truly value a quality education for their child. In fact, 50% of homebuyers with school-aged children state district quality influences neighborhood choice.*

Our California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics continue to demonstrate how our students and schools are excelling. The California Department of Education recently released the results of the testing from last spring in which over three million students across California in grades three and above were assessed. Students in Union School District outperformed their peers within Santa Clara County and across the state of California. The feedback from student-driven lessons and strategies I’ve seen in classrooms across the district, our outstanding professional development opportunities and our CAASPP results show that our teachers’ excellent instruction prepares our students for high school, college and career. I am proud that our district can provide that foundation for excellence for every student, every day.
