August/September 2019

As we close out the third week of school, I am filled with excitement for what the new school year will hold for our Union School District family. As teachers, classified staff and administrators welcomed students back after summer break, it was exciting to see the enthusiastic anticipation of everyone at our school sites to make this the best year for all. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the staff of Union School District, I wish all our families, students and staff a successful 2019-2020 school year.

A New Start
The beginning of the school year is exciting. Whether it’s a kindergartner’s first days at school, a new middle schooler trying to decipher their schedule, or a teacher learning the names of new faces, our schools have done an amazing job in starting the year off strong together. SmartStart activities across the district during the first few days of school have helped develop relationships, eased nerves, and brought students, teachers and staff together as a team. From creatively painted rocks with messages of kindness and encouragement for all to see on campus, to participating in team building and collaborative challenges in order to get to know their classmates, our students are ready to take on the coming year.

Thank You
We are a community. Every single day, I have the honor of working alongside amazing people, who make a difference in students’ lives. In each classroom, our teachers’ dedication is obvious, and they have amazing parent volunteers that back them up. A school can only be a successful space to educate our students when there is an involved community who love and support them. Last year, DonorsChoose.org shared that ten of our teachers were supported by a community of individual, philanthropic, and corporate donors totaling over $6000. I want to wholeheartedly thank each and every one of you for volunteering your time, for supporting our teachers, for coming together as a community, and for giving support to each and every one of our students.

Art Vistas is looking for volunteers!
Art Vistas, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides art education to all students in six elementary schools and two middle schools in the Union School District. They train volunteer parents to become art docents who then go on to teach art history and hands-on projects six times a year to elementary students and two to three times a year to middle schoolers. Docents and helpers prepare, label and mount hundreds of artwork, which are then wonderfully showcased during the annual art show.

This cannot be accomplished without our wonderful volunteer docents in every classroom, the team of head docents in every school, and board members at Art Vistas who provide all the lesson plans, prints, and training. Art Vistas is also looking for volunteers who can help them with the following positions: Administrative Assistant, Training Coordinator, Videographer, or help with ad hoc tasks as needed. Please visithttps://www.artvistasinc.com/volunteer-positions.html for a list of positions, and contactpresident@artvistas.org if you are interested in getting involved.
